He complains about the expenses an officer has at camp, therefore emphasizing his need for money. He also mentions the possibility of Clarence coming to visit during the winter if C. P. is still there. Asks about Clarence’s interests and life at home. He mentions the recruits are rapidly coming into camp where they are not well-equipped. Some are given old muskets which do not function properly and often backfire thus injuring the individual firing the weapon.

He is sorry for not having written any sooner. The reason is that he was simply very busy, not ill in any way. However, there are some who are getting sick because they will eat anything, including raw or bad vegetables. He feels that if he were at home he could better assist the family.
