Scope and Contents
The collection primarily consists of correspondence and ephemera about the various family members of the Pease, Humphrey, and Crossley families.
The Pease family series includes Calvin Pease's correspondence, certificates about his various political appointments, will and testament, and obituary.
The Humphrey family series primarily consists of the Calvin P. Humphrey Civil War correspondence from Camp Chase (June-September 1862). Other items of interest relating to Calvin include a speech he wrote on 'political integrity' for the Junior Exhibition program at Western Reserve College and an obituary.The items on Van Rensselaar Humphrey and Delphine Whedon Humphrey are primarily biographical information created by others. Laura Pease Tallmadge papers consists of two letters: one by Jefferson C. Davis guaranteeing safe passage for her sons through the lines, and another letter praising her late husband Van Renselaar Humphrey.
The Crossley family series consists of correspondence and genealogical material.
The miscellaneous series includes several items found with the collection but not attributed to an individual or family including a draft of a philosophy paper and newspaper articles.

Biography of the Pease, Humphrey, and Crossley families
The Pease, Humphrey and Crossley families papers include information about the following family members: Calvin Pease, Judge Van Rensslaer Humphrey, Laura Pease Tallmadge, Delphine Whedon Humphrey, Calvin Pease Humphrey, Helen Humphrey Crossley, Clarence Humphrey, David Alston Crossley, Sr., and David Alston Crossley, Jr. Brief biographies about the family members covered in this collection is described below:
Calvin Pease (1776-1839) was a lawyer and legislator who served in the Ohio Senate, Ohio House of Representatives and was an Ohio Supreme Court Judge. He was born in Connecticut and moved in Youngstown in 1800, later settling in Warren, Ohio. Pease and his wife Laura Grant Risley had 7 children including Laura Maria Pease Tallmadge (1807-1893).
Laura Pease Tallmadge married George Washington Tallmadge (1800-1835), and after his death married Van Rensslaer Humphrey (1800-1864). Laura served on the Hudson branch of the U.S. Sanitary Commission.
Van Rensselaar Humphrey (1800-1864) was born in Goshen, Connecticut, and settled in Hudson, Ohio, in the 1820s. He was married first to Stella Beach (1799-1832) and later, Laura Pease Tallmadge. Van Rensselaar Humphrey was a prominent lawyer, state legislator and Ohio judge, who was also known for his Copperhead leanings. Judge Humphrey was a mayor of Hudson, the first president of the Hudson Horticulture Society as well as the president of the 50th-anniversary celebration of Hudson's settlement. Their son Calvin P. Humphrey (1840-1902) and their stepson Henry A. Tallmadge (1830-1869) both served in the Civil War.
Calvin Humphrey, born in Hudson, graduated from Hudson Schools and WRA. Calvin married Delphine Whedon Humphrey (1843-1926) (daughter of Harvey Whedon) and they had two children: Clarence Humphrey (1870-1919) and Helen Humphrey Crossley (1872-1915). During the war, he enlisted in the 85th OVI and served as corporal and 88th OVI as lieutenant. After the war, he established a law practice in Akron (Stuart & Humphrey) and later established a practice with his son Humphrey amp; Humphrey.
Helen Humphrey Crossley married David Alston Crossley, Sr. (b.1873). Their son, David Alson Crossley, Jr. (1904-1997) is also included in this collection.
