Scope and Content

The collection consists of materials primarily relating to the boys' soccer program, however, there are several pieces of information relating to the girls' program as well. The collection contains soccer programs from 1971-2000, team photos, photos of the teams trips to Germany, season information, videos and film reels of games from 1969-1999, and scorebooks.

History of Hudson High School Soccer

Hudson High School was founded in 1885 in Hudson, Ohio. The mascot is the Explorer named after famed explorer Lincoln Ellsworth. The Hudson High School soccer program started in 1958 under the first coach Bill Sprague, who ran the program from 1958 to 1959. In 1959 the soccer became a varsity sport and its popularity took off from there. Under the Explorer's third coach Roland Winzer (1966-1979), the team took its first international trips to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. These trips, which were held every three years, provided players with valuable soccer experience from strong European teams. One of the main stops was Landsberg, Germany, Hudson's sister city.

The collection was donated by Tim Patterson, the fifth coach to take the reigns of the Hudson High School's soccer program. Patterson served as a varsity assistant and freshman coach from 1968-1979, and from 1980-2000 as varsity head coach.

Technical Requirements

VCR, DVD player, and a film projector are necessary to view some of the game reels, also a slide projector is necessary to view some of the slides and photographs.

Acquisition Information

Tim Patterson dontated his papers to the Hudson Library and Historical Society in Spring 2012.

Separated Material

Several soccer tee shirts and medals were removed from the collection and placed in the artifact collection at the Hudson Library & Historical Society. Also, several basketball jerseys that were also donated along with the rest of the collection were removed and placed with the rest of the artifacts.
