History of Hudson Club
The Hudson Club was founded in 1912. The club was established to designate the rules and regulations of the use of the clubhouse facility, a local community center in Hudson, Ohio. The clubhouse (now Hayden Hall on the Western Reserve Academy Campus at 88 College Street in Hudson, Ohio) was built in 1870 as a cheese warehouse. In the early 1900s, town benefactor James Ellsworth purchased the property and hired local architect J.W.C. Corbusier to remodel the building. Corbusier added the Greek Revival columns in the front.
The clubhouse was used primarily for various meetings of local clubs and organizations. When the Hudson Library & Historical Society was founded in 1910, Ellsworth offered space in the club house to house the library and was the Hudson Library & Historical Society's first location.
Citizens wanted the club house to be open more permanently so in 1912 a formal club was formed and membership was offered to Hudson citizens. Formal constitution and bylaws were adopted and rules and regulations were written in late 1912. Citizens could purchase a membership for 50 cents to use the clubhouse, which featured amenities such as a gymnasium, pool tables, a bowling alley, and a library.
It is unknown when the clubhouse ceased operation, but it was evenutally bequeathed to Western Reserve Academy when the school was founded in 1916.
