History of Hudson Cornet Band
Originally formed in 1860 as the Hudson Brass Band, it was “organized for the mutual pleasure of its members with the idea of encouraging each other along musical lines; aiding our young musicians in band work and to furnish music for public entertainment particularly on patriotic occasions (The Times, Hudson Ohio, July 7, 1939).” The Hudson Brass Band first meeting was on March 19th, 1860, electing officials and creating bylaws. It is believed to be the first band formed in Hudson. Sometime in the 1880s the band changed its name to the Hudson Cornet Band. The band instruments during this time were 2 E-flat Cornets, 2 B-flat cornets, 3 E-flat Altos, 1 B-Flat tenor, 1 B-flat Baritone, 1 B-flat Bass, 1 E-Flat Bass, and 1 Drum and cymbals. The Hudson Cornet Bland played at many venues around Hudson, including Adelphian Hall, Commencement Day at Western Reserve College, and Memorial Day festivities at Markillie Cemetery. At some point in the 1890s the Hudson Cornet Band, was simply known as the Hudson Band.
