Biography of Biography or History
The Bishop family were early settlers of Hudson, Ohio.
In 1800, Samuel Bishop (1746-1813) traveled with David Hudson (1761-1836) from Goshen, Connecticut, to the Western Reserve. A year later, Samuel returned with his family, including his wife Lois Gaylord Bishop (1750-1820), sons David (1782-1863) and Luman (1783-1849), to settle in Hudson. David Bishop married Sarah Kennedy (1784-1848), and had three children: Caroline Bishop (1809-1872), Wiley Bishop (1822-1887) & Otis D. Bishop (1829-1898). During the War of 1812, David enlisted as a private in fellow Hudsonite Amos Lusk's (1779-1813) Company. David mustered out of the army on August 9th, 1813. Later, David and his family moved to Portage County in 1820s, living in Charlestown until his death. Luman Bishop (1783-1849), another son of Samuel and Lois Bishop, married Rachel Gaylord (1795-1845). Their children were: Leonard Bishop (1810-?), George Bishop, Gaylord Bishop (1824-1910), Moses C. Bishop (1828-1910), and Mary Bishop Glasier. Luman also served in the War of 1812, enlisting in Darrow’s Odd Battalion, Ohio, and Militia as a Sergeant. Luman was a farmer and lived in Hudson in 1820s and then moved to Hiram (at that time in Portage County) in 1830, then to Boston Township, where he died in 1849. Luman and Rachel's son Gaylord Bishop (1824-1910) married Elizabeth Bishop (1831-1897) on September 24, 1851. Their children were: Harriett R. Bishop (1843-?), Nellie J. Bishop (1866-?), and Louisa Bishop (1872-?).
