Biographical / Historical

In the 1970s, the Hudson village governmental offices and units were running out of space: the town hall was crowded, the fire station was full, and some units were renting space above Main Street shops. A Joint Municipal Facilities Planning Committee was formed to stuy Hudson's future needs for governmental office space and facilities for the police and fire departments. The city secured nine acres of the original Green and adjacent land from a 130-year-old easement from the old Railroad. After a plan was discussed and conceived, the measure was placed on the ballot as a bond issue. The committee outlined six elements to the plan:

1) Relocate and enlarge fire house. The existing building would be moved to the corner of Ravenna and College and enlarged. 2) Relocate and enlarge police facilities. An existing building on Oviatt would be remodeled for this space. 3) Remodel the town hall. Once the police departments are moved, the Town Hall would be remodeled and would be able to accommodate more units. 4) Begin community center. The building across from the police station on Oviatt would be remodeled for use as a community ceter 5) Restore original Green. The two southern quadrants of the Green will be regraded. 6) Build a flood control lake and recreation area

The proposed project was budgeted to cost $2,150,000 and asked for a millage increase (approx. 3.5-4% increase depending on village vs. township resident). In 1976, the Township Trustees and Village Council placed four bond issues on the June ballot (land acquisition and improvements; relocation and expansion of fire house; village police facilities; and township police facilities. The ballot initiative passed. The project was eventually completed in 1982.
