Biography of Biography or History

Rev. William Hanford (1787-1861) was the first Congregational minister in Hudson. Hanford was the youngest son of John and Mehetabal (Comstock) Hanford, born in Norwalk, Connecticut, on November 11, 1787. He was a graduate of Yale (A.B. 1808), attended the Divinity School in Andover, Mass. (1810-1813) and was ordained at North Stanford Connecticut on October 1813. Through the Connecticut Missionary Society, he became a missionary to the Western Reserve and arrived in Canfield, Ohio in 1813. He was made Pastor of the Congregational Church in Hudson on August 17, 1815, eventually purchasing land and building a log house in the town.

He married Amelia Wright (1798-1870), daughter of Elizur Wright (1762-1845) on September 30, 1817. In Hudson, he helped established Western Reserve College and was the first secretary of the Board of Trustees. Hanford resided in Hudson until 1831 and left for a church in Windham, Ohio, and then later, moved to Tallmadge. Hanford and his wife are buried in Tallmadge.
