Biography of Biography of the Starr family

The Starr family (George Leander Starr and Cordelia Starr) descend from early Hudson settler Moses Thompson (1776-1858), the first physician in the Western Reserve. Thompson's daughter, Ruth Brown Thompson married Leander Starr (1804-1885) and had two children: Cordelia Starr (1840-1923) and George Leander Starr (1833-1920).

George Leander Starr was born in Hudson, Ohio, and graduated from Western Reserve College in 1856. In 1865, he received his diploma from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York. He was a member of the 85th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and served in the Sanitary and Christian Commission. He practiced medicine for forty years in Knoxville (Tenn.), Tallmadge, Youngstown, and Hudson, Ohio. He married Harriet A. Starr (1839-1923). Harriet and George were active members of the Congregational Church.

Harriet A. Lobdell (Sheehy/Sheahy) Starr was born in South Bend, Indiana. Her father died when she was young and she went to Youngstown to live wither her aunt and uncle (Sheahy). She married George Starr in 1868 and they moved to Hudson in 1878.

Cordelia Starr was born in Hudson. She attended a female seminary in Hudson and was active in the Congregational Church. She also served as secretary of the Hudson Ladies' Cemetery association for 25 years. Both Hattie and Cordelia died on Wednesday, February 21, 1923. A newspaper account describes their long friendship and death: "Together almost constantly for 44 years, Mrs. Hattie A. Starr and her sister-in-law, Miss Cordelia Starr who died in the house where they had lived together for so long within 15 hours of each other Wednesday were buried side by side this afternoon in the little Congregational cemetery at Hudson following a double funeral service."
