Biography of Joan Drew Ritchings

Joan Drew Ritchings (1916-2002) was a writer, painter, sculptor and graphic artist, specializing in fine prints including serigraphs and lithographs. She was born in Indiana and raised in Baltimore and Newton, Massachusetts, and later lived in Hudson, Ohio, and Rye, New York. She graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art and later studied at the Art Students League in New York City. Her work has appeared in numerous museums including the Museum of Modern Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Albright-Knox Gallery, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Philadelphia Art Museum. Her prints appeared on the cover of the New York Times Sunday Book Review, and the first edition of her print "Fifty-Eight People and a Tree" sold out at the Members Gallery of the Museum of Modern Art. In addition to her art, Ritchings was also a poet and writer, founding The Gray Moose Press in Hudson, Ohio, in 1940. She edited, designed, and illustrated 13 books, some of which can be found in rare book collections including the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress. She married Robert Ritchings (1914-1986) in 1939 and lived in Hudson until 1946. Together they had three children.
