Scope and Content

The collection consists primarily of photographs. One folder of biographical material includes various obituaries and basic biographical material on Ralph, Rowena, and Judy. The photographs consist primarily of images of the Simon family (Rowena, Ralph, and Judy) and some extended family members. Other photographs include views of Western Reserve Academy buildings and photographs of students and activities at the Academy.

Biography of Biography or History

Ralph Burl Simon (1887-1962) was a graduate of Ohio State University and taught at Ohio Northern University before moving to Hudson in 1919. In Hudson, he taught biology teacher at Western Reserve Academy for 34 years. During World War II, he ran the Academy's farms. Simon Road in Hudson was named after him. He was married to Rowena Kuntz Simon (1890-1988). Rowena was raised in western Ohio, and was a graduate of Ohio Northern University. She directed plays for the Western Reserve Academy and Hudson Players.

Ralph and Rowena had one daughter Judith S. David (1925-1985). She was raised in Hudson and was a 1943 graduate of Laurel School. She graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School in 1946 and worked in advertising in Chicago until 1964, when she returned to Hudson. The Simon family once resided at 37 Church Street. They were active in the Congregational Church and both Rowena and Ralph sang in the choir.
