History of History of the Hudson Community Playground

The Preschool Parents organization created the Hudson Community Playground after seeing a need for a community-led playground. Two locations were originally considered, Hudson Springs Park and the Hudson Green Extension, eventually the organization and the Park Board settled on the latter due to its proximity to the center of town.

The Hudson Community Playground committee contracted with noted playground designer, Robert Leathers Architectural Firm, to help design the project based on the input from the community. On July 26, 1988, the Village Trustees approved the Hudson Green Extension off Maple Drive for the site of the new park. The build cost of this park was fully funded by the community, and built by community members in what was called "a modern barn raising." The Hudson Rotary Club gave $1,500 to bring in an architect from the Leather's Firm to tour the location and meet with the community.

Village of Hudson Mayor, Harold L. Bayless (1922-2002) declared Playground Design Day on November 21, 1988. Community members and kids were invited to attend and give input on the design and of playground and any key features. After crowd-sourcing a playground design, members of the Hudson Community Playground committee began fundraising in 1988 and continuing the following year.

The committee hosted numerous fundraisers to help cover the $50,000 cost, events included: Buy a Board, Run for Fun, Movie Marathon, auction, Unbirthday Party, Pennies from Heaven and much more. Local businesses donated materials, and citizens donated tools and manpower. In total the committee surpassed expectations, raising a total of $60,000.

Construction began on May 31, 1989, with a crew consisting of Hudson citizens, students, and members of surrounding communities all overseen by the Leather's Firm. In total, construction lasted five days and was completed on June 5, 1989. In 1990, the committee helped oversee some maintenance and cleaning projects.
