Biography of John Markillie

John Markillie was born to Samuel (1786-1831) and Lucinda "Lucy" Hurn Darley Markillie (1771-1850) in 1814 in Fleet, England. He traveled to the United States in 1832 and settled in Hudson, Ohio. His mother joined him in the following year. Markillie married Lucinda Bishop (1816-1903), a Hudson native, and the couple adopted two girls: Lydia Andrews (1842-1913) and Sarah Ann Leighton Ross (1853-1923). Markillie worked as a carriage and coffin maker. He was also known for his photography, which often included portraits of local residents. Some of Markillie's photographs can be found in the Hudson Library's photograph collection. In 1855, he donated land for a cemetery that passed to the Village of Hudson upon his death in 1868 and was named in his honor.
