Scope and Content
The collection consists of one volume of handwritten entries of deaths in Hudson, Ohio. Emory Lewis kept records of deaths from 1823-1888 (pages 1-122) and Grace Ellsworth Forbush continued the entries until her death in 1959. The entries are kept in order of death date. Each entry lists the decendent's name and death date. Other information also may include: age at death, place of death, cause of death, and family names. A transcription of the data is available at the Hudson Library & Historical Society. Source of information of E.E. Lewis's information is unknown. Grace compiled information from "clippings" (likely obituaries from newspapers).

Biographical / Historical
Grace Forbush and Emory Lewis are descendants of the Ellsworth family, early settlers of Hudson, Ohio. Grace and Emory are related through Elisha Ellsworth (1785-1859), who settled in Hudson in 1820. Elisha was Emory's uncle and Grace's great grandfather. The 1880 census lists Emory Ellsworth Lewis' (1828-1888) occupation as 'carpenter.' His mother was Polly Ellsworth Lewis, sister of Elisha Ellsworth (1785-1859). Grace Ellsworth Forbush (1881-1903) was the only child of Elisha M. Ellsworth (1855-1929) and Emma Bishop (1857-1930). She married Elmer (Wallis) Forbush (1872-1937) and they had two children: Scott (1904-1984) and Louise (1906-1996).

Custodial History
A handwritten note is inscribed on page 123 explaining the chain of custody: "This record was kept by Emory Ellsworth Lewis, whose mother Polly Ellsworth Lewis was a sister of my great grandfather Elisha Ellsworth. Emory Lewis died Aug. 6, 1888. The last entry was of May 14, 1888. This record was given to me by Emory Lewis' grandson Roy Lewis on July 14, 1953. Grace Ellsworth Forbush b. 6.25.1881 [d. 5.5.1959]"
