Scope and Content

The collection is comprised of 1 bound volume (8"x10") of recipes handwritten by Mary Brewster Wolcott. Some of the recipes are attributed to various family and friends including Lucy Brewster, Mrs. M.C. Read, Mrs. Wm. Beebe, Nellie B. Wolcott, Ellen Beebe, Mrs. Charlie Read, Jennie Wolcott, and more. The recipes are organized by recipe "type" with an index in the back (p.287). The recipes include breads, cakes, fritters, puddings, pickled items, salads, soups, sauces, drinks, vegetables, etc. An envelope is pasted to the back cover and labeled "additional recipes" with about 23 loose pages, mostly handwritten (a few clippings). A wedding invitation is also pasted on the inside cover (and has a recipe handwritten on it), "Mr. & Mrs. S.P. Wolcott request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Jennie Brewster & Mr. Edward Sawyer Parsons."

Biography of Mary Brewster Wolcott

Mary Brewster Wolcott was the daughter of Hudsonites Sarah (Sally) White (1812-1889) and Anson Brewster, Jr. (1807-1864). Anson was a successful dry goods merchant and former Hudson mayor. Mary married Simon Perkins Wolcott (1837-1901) of Northfield, Ohio, and had three children: Nellie, Jennie, and Duncan.
