Scope and Content

The collection, compiled by George Andrew Miller, consists of scrapbooks and correspondence documenting the local history of Hudson, Ohio. The first scrapbook is the "Physicians of Hudson: Members of the Medical Profession who Practiced in Hudson, Ohio from 1800-1933." The collection also includes a set of lantern slides of early images of Hudson along with an image key and Miller's research. The Physicians of Hudson scrapbook includes a typed biographies of various physicians and doctors who practiced in Hudson. For many of the doctors, Miller searched through genealogical and local history records to compile a biographical sketch on the individual. Many sketches include the doctor’s date of birth date of death, schooling, dates of practice in Hudson, and other relevant information. George corresponded with living descendants, and when possible, used their information to supplement the biographical sketches. The doctors profiled in this book are individually indexed except: Dr. Austin, B. Hanson, E. Kendrick, and Dr. Tate. The lantern slides consist of a variety of scenes of early Hudson, Ohio, along with an accompanying index. The Hudson Library owns a bulk of the physical originals of the photographs reproduced on the lantern slides. Most of these photographs have been digitized and are cataloged individually in the Library's photograph database.

Biography of George Andrew Miller

George Andrew Miller (1875-1935) was a physician in Hudson, Ohio. Miller was born on July 30, 1835 in Twinsburg, Ohio, to Robert J. Miller (1845-1914) and Amelia I. (1852-1922). The family moved to Aurora, Ohio, shortly after George was born.The couple had five children: Hellen A. (1873-date unknown), Francis L. (1873-1947), George A. (1875-1935), Minnie A. (1877-1962), and Malinda I. (1879-date unknown). George attended school in the Aurora School District, and graduated from high school in 1875. Afterwards, George enrolled at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio, where he graduated in 1897. After graduation, George left Ohio, and attended medical school at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Tufts Medical School, and additional courses at the National College of Electro-Therapeutics in Chicago, Illinois. During his time in Massachusetts, George operated a drug store. In 1908, George moved back to Ohio, and settled in Hudson. Originally, George opened a drug store in the town, but he closed the establishment after a few years so he could practice medicine. George ran his office out of his house, was a trained oculist, and was the first physician in Hudson, Ohio, to travel to the homes of his patients using an automobile. George did take a break from practicing medicine during World War I, when he enlisted in the Army and stationed at MC Camp Grant in Rockford, Illinois. After the war, George maintained a presence in the military as a captain of the Ohio National Guard. During his life, George married twice, and did not have children. George married his first wife, Louise C. (1870-1912), in 1900, but widowed in 1912 when she passed away. In 1928, George married Helen Lowman Miller (1885-1970). Helen was an educator, and had recently moved to Ohio for a career opportunity. Later in her career, Helen became a librarian at the Hudson Library & Historical Society. George was active in a number of organizations and religious communities in Hudson. George served time as a member of the Village Council, a member of the Hudson Board of Health, and Blue Lodge of Hudson. George also took an interest in local history, and collecting the information and documentation of local physicians who practiced in Hudson, along with identification of historical sites and individuals. On December 11, 1935, George passed away from a sudden heart attack.
